A subscription audit should end with decisions, not a beautiful spreadsheet. Set a 20-minute timer, look at the places recurring payments actually appear and use the same three choices for every charge: keep, change or cancel.
Find the recurring charges
Check the last two or three months of:
- the bank account used for direct debits or mandates;
- credit-card statements;
- app-store subscriptions;
- digital wallets or payment apps with recurring mandates;
- annual renewal emails;
- employer or household reimbursements that hide the true cost to you.
Search for the merchant name and the amount, not only the product name you remember. A parent company or payment processor can appear on the statement instead.
For UPI AutoPay, open the mandate or AutoPay area in the UPI app linked to the paying account. NPCI’s current operating guidance requires UPI apps to provide mandate lifecycle controls—including viewing, pausing, modifying or revoking a mandate—through the bank-account or dedicated UPI AutoPay area. Use your app’s current labels and keep the completion screen. See NPCI’s UPI AutoPay guidance.
Make one of three decisions
Keep
Keep a subscription when you would actively buy it again at today’s price and it fits the current household plan. Record the next renewal date if the amount is annual or variable.
Change
Change it when the service is useful but the plan is wrong. Check whether a lower tier, annual plan, family arrangement or pause feature genuinely reduces cost without adding a longer commitment you do not want. Read the final price and renewal terms before confirming.
Cancel
Cancel when you would not choose it again, you can use an existing alternative, or the original need has ended. Complete the cancellation while the decision is fresh. A reminder to cancel later is not a cancellation.
Save proof of the exit
Keep the confirmation email or screenshot until at least one statement cycle after the final expected charge. Record:
- the cancellation date;
- the access end date;
- any final charge or refund promised;
- the support reference if the process required contact.
If a merchant continues charging, use its formal support route first and preserve the record. Your bank or card provider can explain the dispute or mandate controls available for that payment method.
Watch for the four quiet renewals
Some charges need a specific check:
- Annual renewals: low visibility because they appear once a year.
- Free trials: the decision date arrives before the first paid month.
- Price changes: the service may still be useful but no longer pass the same decision.
- Shared subscriptions: cancellation affects other people, so assign an owner and agree before acting.
Finish with one monthly value
Add the monthly cost of what remains. Convert annual charges to a monthly equivalent for planning, but keep the actual renewal date visible. The result is not a moral score. It is the amount you are choosing to continue.
Repeat the audit quarterly or whenever income, household membership or a major routine changes. If you find nothing to cancel, that can mean the previous audit worked.
